(Canastota, NY – April 2013) On Monday April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Canastota Public Library, the next Canalside Talk features “Young Man from Canastota in the Civil War.”
Learn about the life of Civil War soldiers through the experiences of Oliver Tibbetts May, “A Young Man From Canastota In The Civil War,” a multi-media presentation prepared by Canal Town Director Joe DiGiorgio.
Oliver, who made his home in Canastota, recorded in a diary his experiences of active service from the time he entered the Civil War as a private in the Twelfth New York Volunteers and later as an officer with the 149th New York Volunteers.
The talk will include overviews of campaigns and battles from Bull Run to the march into Savannah in which Oliver participated. Along with details of life in the service, weapons and the horrors of war, references will be made to his relationships with the 157th Co. G, the “boys from Canastota.”
This Canalside Talk, co-sponsored by Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Library, is free to the public.
