(Herkimer, NY – April 4, 2013) Herkimer County Community College is partnering with Herkimer Now, the Village of Herkimer, and Keep Mohawk Valley Beautiful to implement the inaugural “A Cleaner & Greener Herkimer.” The village-wide clean up initiative will take place Friday, April 19 to Monday, April 22 with several projects planned throughout the weekend. Community members are welcome and encouraged to join in all activities.
On Friday, April 19, HCCC’s Upsilon Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society will conduct a highway clean up on Route 5 in East Herkimer. The group cleans a portion of the highway biannually as part of the New York State Adopt a Highway Program. Anyone interested in participating should meet at 3:30 p.m. in the Lowe’s parking lot.
The 8th annual Canal Clean Sweep will take place Friday, April 19. Volunteers should meet at 4:00 p.m. in the MOVAC parking lot located at 15 State Route 5S, Mohawk. The Canal Clean Sweep is part of the New York State Canal Corporation’s initiative in partnership with Parks & Trails New York and the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation.
Herkimer Now will lead their semi-annual clean-up of the village of Herkimer’s Main Street on Saturday, April 20. Participants are asked to meet at 10:00 a.m. at the 1834 Herkimer County Jail, 327 North Main Street. Please bring a rake or broom; bags and gloves will be provided.
The Herkimer Mini Park Clean Up will take place on Monday, April 22 at 3:30 pm. HCCC student clubs and organizations have conducted spring clean ups of the Mini Park at the corner of West Smith & William Streets for the past several years.
Also planned for Monday, April 22 is the Brookwood Park Clean Up at 4:00 pm. Volunteers will meet at the park. The entrance is on German Street.
Community members are encouraged to participate in any and all clean up initiatives. A limited number of gloves, trash bags, safety vests, rakes and shovels will be provided; volunteers are encouraged to bring their own.
