(Abington, Pa. – April 7, 2013) The Morrisville State College women’s lacrosse team dominated the field this weekend, sweeping back-to-back conference action with a convincing 23-7 win over host Penn State Abington Sunday afternoon in Abington.Morrisville State Lacrosse logo

The Mustangs, who are the defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions, and have their eyes set on another title this season, improve to 3-5 overall, 2-0 in NEAC play.

Shelby Wood (Duanesburg, N.Y.) paced the Mustangs with seven goals and assisted another four for 11 team points, while Jessica Young (Clifton Park, N.Y.) added five tallies of her own adding an assist. Cassie Edmondson (Oshawa, Ontario) and Meghan Soto (Jamaica, N.Y.) each netted three to round out top scoring for Morrisville State.

Wood also added seven ground balls and five draw controls to her tallies on the day.

Cailin Dunphy (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) recorded the win in net, registering the lone Morrisville State save on the day in nearly 41 minutes of play before being relieved by Veronique Krohn (Amsterdam, N.Y.) for the final 19.

Nichole Haynes was the top scorer for the Nittany Lions, posting three tallies while Sandy Cao registered the loss between the pipes with eight saves on the day.

Soto posted the first tally of the day for the Mustangs just two minutes into the contest before Abington responded with one of their own seconds later. That was the closest the Nittany Lions would get, as Morrisville State then ignited for seven additional scores within a four minute time span for the commanding 8-1 lead.

Abington added two more scores with 17 minutes to go but the Mustangs closed out the half with six more goals for the 15-3 advantage at the break, a lead that was too significant for Abington to overcome.

Morrisville State dominated the Nittany Lions in shots, 37-13, and held the advantage in both the ground ball and draw control battle, 20-14 and 20-12 respectively.

The Mustangs return to the field Thursday, traveling to SUNY Oswego for a non-conference contest at 4 p.m. in Oswego.
