Join us and learn the skills needed to monitor your favorite water body or landscape

(April 2013) Invasive species of plants, animals, insects and microorganisms are among the most serious threats to native species, habitats and ecosystems within the five county areas that define the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario (SLELO) Region. Invasive species interfere with many types of outdoor recreation. They reduce crop yields on local farms, restrict visibility along highways and create roadside hazards. Invasive insects kill trees in forested areas as well as in public parks and along community streets.

The economic impact of invasive species in the United States alone has been estimated at 120 to 130 billion annually. Local communities have been challenged with controlling invasive species or remediating their impacts at costs ranging from several thousand to millions of dollars.

The partners of the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario – Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO-PRISM) are teaming up to stop the spread of invasive species and invite the general public to attend one or more of the following information sessions to learn about invasive species in the region and to learn the skills to monitor your favorite water body or landscape.

Who should attend? The general public, cottage owners, elected officials, highway personnel, sportsmen and women, boaters, gardeners, landscapers, hikers, birders, photographers, farmers, campers and other interested persons are encouraged to participate
