(Utica, NY – May 2013) Mohawk Valley Community College had three members of its athletic programs honored this Spring as recipients of the 2013 Chancellor’s Scholar Athletic Awards.
“These outstanding students are SUNY champions not only in their chosen sports but also in our classrooms, with an average GPA of 3.59 among them,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “Congratulations to this year’s honorees, to the professors and coaches who mentored them, and to the many faculty and staff on our campuses across the state who supported them.”
Receiving this outstanding honor were Tyler Radcliff from the MVCC’s baseball team, Jason Crandall from the men’s bowling program and Mia DeGironimo from the women’s soccer team. There were 66 recipients this year, who were nominated by the athletic director of each campus. Their accomplishments were reviewed by a panel of SUNY athletic directors as well as the Provost’s Office.
DeGironimo is a sophomore pursuing a Liberal Arts & Science degree in General Studies. While serving as co-captain of the NJCAA National Championship women’s soccer team (21-1-1 record), she has maintained a 3.94 GPA. As a defensive midfielder, DeGironimo was named MVP of this year’s national tournament.
A graduate of New Hartford High School and native of New Hartford, she has been accepted at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Maryland and University of Pittsburgh for the Fall semester. She is planning on pursuing a major in the field of Kinesiology.
Radcliff is a sophomore from Burgaw, N.C., and a graduate of Heide Task High School in Rocky Point, N.C. During his first season with the Hawks, he was 1st Team All-Region III and All-Mountain Valley Conference where he led MVCC to a 24-17 record. That season, he hit for a .342 average with 27 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. He was also a starting pitcher where he earned two victories.
This season, he suffered a knee injury during the last game of the team’s South Carolina trip and was out for the season. He was the Hawks’ team captain, helping to coach from the bench. He is completing an Associate degree in Liberal Arts & Science – General Studies.
Crandall was selected as a 1st Team All American at the NJCAA National Tournament held in Buffalo. A native of Waterville and graduate of Waterville Central School, Crandall is pursuing an Associate degree in Financial Services Management.
