(Utica, NY – May 2013) In celebration of National Food Allergy Awareness Week (May 12 –18), Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is honored to announce the first-ever WALK for FOOD ALLERGY in Utica, to be held on Sept. 8 at SUNY IT.
People with food allergies, their family and friends, and local community members are invited to participate in this family-friendly event, which will take place in more than 60 communities nationwide to fund food allergy education, advocacy, awareness, and research. The FARE WALK for FOOD ALLERGY unites thousands of Americans seeking a safe and inclusive world for people with food allergies. This potentially life-threatening disease affects up to 15 million Americans, including 1 in 13 children – roughly two in every classroom.
“A food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room every three minutes. Sadly, kids with food allergies know that one bite of the wrong food could have dangerous consequences, including anaphylaxis, a potentially deadly reaction. But it does not have to be that way. We are making great progress in developing life-saving treatments and programs,” said John L. Lehr, chief executive officer of FARE. “Thanks to our generous sponsors and dedicated supporters, the day will come when we say FAREwell to food allergies.”
The local FARE committee was formed in February 2013 and is actively organizing and promoting the upcoming Sept. 8 walk. If you are interested in learning more about food allergies and FARE or would like to form your own FARE Walk Team, visit www.foodallergywalk.org and search Utica, NY.
“As a parent of a child who has a severe food allergy, I am thrilled that we are able to bring this Walk to Utica,” said Committee Chair Kristen Scanlon. “We invite everyone in our community to get involved and help make this event a great success!”
