(June 2013) Partners of the SLELO-PRISM (St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario – Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management, are seeking volunteers to learn the skills to monitor your favorite landscape or water body for invasive species.

Invasive species of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals are among the most serious threats to native species, habitats and ecosystems within the five county areas that define the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario (SLELO) Region. Invasive species also interfere with many types of outdoor recreation such as boating, swimming and fishing. They reduce crop yields on local farms, restrict visibility along highways and create roadside hazards. The economic impact of invasive species in the United States alone has been estimated at 120 to 130 billion dollars annually.

The partners of the St. Lawrence Eastern Lake Ontario – Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (SLELO-PRISM) are teaming up to stop the spread of invasive species and invite the general public to attend a short outdoor training event to learn the skills to monitor your favorite water body or landscape. This two-part session will teach participants how to identify common invasive species along with the skills to monitor your favorite water body or landscape. Participants will then engage in an actual hands-on community demonstration monitoring event combined with hand-pulling the aquatic invasive plant known as Water Chestnut.
