(Oneida County, NY – June 13, 2013) Thanks to donations from International Wire and Kirch Hardware, Cornell Cooperative Extension Oneida County 4-H announces a free bus trip for third grade students in Camden and McConnellsville Elementary School to Cornell Lab of Entomology in October 2013.
For the past several years the Cornell Lab of Entomology has opened its doors to the public for a fun educational family event called Insectapalooza. College students from the Entomology Department organize the day’s event with true hands-on insect opportunities including cockroach races, an indoor butterfly house and live exhibits of spiders, scorpions and tarantulas. The public is invited into the vaults to view the insect collection, encouraged to speak directly with students about the research they are working on, and for the truly adventurous, there is an opportunity to sample some cricket cookies.
The open house of an ivy league, world class insect collection is an experience that few adults and children should miss.
The field trip will be a true learning experience for the youth. The opportunity was introduced during a free, 45 minute “Insect Class” conducted by an Oneida County 4-H Staff Member. Students wishing to apply for the trip must demonstrate a desire to learn and understand about insects.
Your child must currently be 3rd grade students in Camden or McConnellsville Elementary and must agree to:
- Build a Bug from objects found around the home. Instructions are available at http://goo.gl/PWLyD
- Write a description explaining why the insect has evolved the characteristics it has.
- Drop off the bug and essay (in a box) at Kirch Hardware on July 13th between Noon and 3PM
- Speak with a 4-H Representative about the project.
A legal guardian must accompany the student to Cornell. No Chaperones will be provided.
This is a unique opportunity for Camden and McConnelsville students to experience alongside a parent. Space is limited so register as soon as possible. https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/4-H.Build-a-bug _230
