(July 2013) Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney (R,C,I-New Hartford) joined the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NWFL) and the National Rifle Association (NRA) to announce the 16th annual Bill of Rights Scholarship Contest.

“The NFWL and NRA are offering an award, a $3,000 scholarship and an all-expense-paid trip to the NFWL’s 2013 Annual Conference, to six winners of a Bill of Rights Essay Contest. The two topics about which participants may write stem from controversial current events about the protection of personal information and the issue of sexual assault within the military. Either topic must include perspective on how the Founding Fathers would have felt about today’s current state of affairs. This academic exercise gives an insightful outlook on how the young women of our community foresee resolving the ebb and flow of conflict and social change in our society, and their fresh perspective may give the members of NFWL new ideas and encouragement on how to tackle these issues,” said Tenney.

Qualified participants are female students from the 2013 and 2014 classes who write on one of the two topics, get two letters of character reference and a female legislator as a sponsor. The deadline for applications is September 15.

“I would be more than excited to sponsor any young woman who would like to participate in this contest, especially if they come from the 101st Assembly District. This contest and conference offer great opportunities for our young women to learn civic engagement and set them on a path to gain invaluable leadership skills and independence,” said Tenney.

The NFWL’s Annual Conference will be held at WashingtonDC’s Ritz-Carlton from November 20-22. The conference will include a dinner for ‘Women of the Future’ as well as a number of workshops and meetings on various issues. The six winners of the Scholarship Contest will have all expenses paid to attend the conference.

The NFWL supports elected women from all levels of governance through annual educational and networking events. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, NFWL does not take ideological positions on public policy issues, but rather serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.
