McCarney Tabbed for Offensive Player Honors in Preseason Voting
(Bethlehem, Pa. – July 2013) The voting was close, but Colgate is the preseason choice to repeat as Patriot League football champion in 2013.
The Raiders edged second-place Lehigh 58-56 in overall tallies and 8-6 in first-place votes from the conference head coaches and sports information directors. This year’s preseason poll was released in conjunction with the annual Football Media Day here Wednesday.
In addition, senior quarterback Gavin McCarney was named the league’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. McCarney took home that honor at the end of last season after a spectacular season. The Jefferson Township, N.J., native led the country in scoring and now has his name on 18 different Colgate individual records.
Other Raiders on the 2013 Patriot League Football Preseason All-League Team are fullback Ed Pavalko, offensive lineman Andrew Scarmardo and defensive back Mike Armiento. There is no second team named in the preseason.
Colgate begins practice Monday and opens its season Aug. 31 at Air Force.
