(Cazenovia, NY – Aug. 2013) Throughout August, visitors to the Cazenovia Public Library Art Gallery will enjoy the photography of Cazenovia residents Barbara Cloud Wells and Chris Nevison.
Their long-time enjoyment of hiking became their path to photography. Their collected works in this exhibition represent many of the vibrant scenes and varied genres that they have experienced during their excursions.
“Studying with Rocky Mountain Photography helped us develop a passion for working with the technical aspects of cameras and lenses while capturing the unique beauty found in different environments,” Wells explains. “For the first time, we found excitement in really seeing nature and capturing it artistically, instead of just documenting what we see.”
They furthered their studies with Nancy Rotenburg, world-renowned photographer.
“Her leadership helped us understand that images are developed with the heart and soul,” said Wells.
Visitors marvel at the exquisite Memorial Garden and Fairy Garden that adorn the library’s lower entrance. These are also the artistic work of Wells and Nevison, who developed them and continue to care for them, all under the watchful eye of BoBear, their ever-attentive dog. Notecards by Wells and Nevison are available for purchase at the library with the proceeds used to support the gardens.
Wells and Nevison have been in education for 38 years. Nevison is a full-time professor at Colgate, and Wells is now retired, enjoying community work. They love to garden, travel, play tennis, and explore the beauty of their surroundings.
“Photography is mostly a hobby for us,” said Wells, “but we are pleased when we win awards and sell our pieces.”
Nevison’s “Baby Birds” was a finalist in an international competition last year, and this coming winter their work will be displayed in Florida.
The Cazenovia Public Library Art Gallery is open during regular Library hours: 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. weekdays and 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Saturdays.
