(Oneida, NY- Aug. 2013) For elementary students wondering about extreme weather, the OPL’s Mad Professor, Jen Herzog from Herkimer County Community College, will teach a hands-on Science Workshop about the mysteries of weather at Oneida Public Library Tuesday through Thursday afternoons, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Aug. 6, 7 and 8.
On day one, Herzog will explain the essentials of weather, from solar radiation to air pressure, using the balloon in a jar and the marshmallow experiments to demonstrate the principles.
The second session focuses on the hydrologic cycle, including rain, snow, lightning and thunder. The children will try out a thunderstorm experiment and make lightning in a controlled electricity experiment.
On Thursday, Herzog will take up hurricanes and tornadoes, including the tornado in a bottle experiment, and discuss the causes of climate change and its impact on weather.
The science workshop is free and open to all school-aged children.
