Senior Duo Scores for the Raiders in the Patriot League Matchup

(Lewisburg, Pa. – Sept. 28, 2013)  The Colgate field hockey team had a 2-1 lead at halftime, but Bucknell responded with five unanswered goals in the second half to earn the 6-2 win on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action.

Colgate (1-8, 0-2 PL) got goals from Halle Biggar and Meredith Gibson, while Olivia Nabhan and Whitney Jones added assists. Amanda DiDomizio had another double-digit save performance with 13 stops in net in the loss.

The Bison (5-4, 2-0 PL) saw Rachel Misko tally a second-half hat trick with two of the goals coming five minutes apart and one on a penalty stroke. Kiersten Sydnor and Leigh Hillman also scored and Hillman is now tied with Eliana Brown for the Patriot League lead with seven goals on the season. Erica Perrine got the start in net and made five saves, including one on a breakaway by Nabhan.

Bucknell wasted no time getting on the board with Sydnor scoring off a rebound in front. The Bison put pressure on the Raiders right away and DiDimizio made two quick saves, but Sydnor was able to chip a shot high over the goalie and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

It didn’t take long for the Raiders to respond on a nice rush up field. Colgate did a nice job stopping the attack of the Bison on the offensive side of the field and Nabhan collected the ball at the top of the circle. She then fired a shot that Biggar tipped home in front to tie the game at 1-1 with 27:24 left in the first half.

Nabhan had a golden opportunity with a breakaway coming with 10 minutes left in the half. The senior broke in behind the defense and tried to shovel a shot past Perrine, but the goalie reached out with the stick at the last moment to slide it just wide of the post to keep it a 1-1 game.

The Raiders earned their first lead of the contest with less than two minutes left in the half with Gibson scoring her first of the season on a nice tip in at the far post. Whitney Jones found the senior to give Colgate the 2-1 advantage going into the half.

Misko came back and scored her third goal of the season to tie the score for the second time in the game at 2-2. She connected on a backhanded shot from the top of the circle and it found its way into the back of the cage. The Bison regained the lead at 3-2 with a penalty stroke score from Misko to give her two goals in a matter of five minutes. She mishit the stroke and DiDomizio guessed right, but the mishit slows the ball down and it got by Colgate’s goalie.

The Bison got some insurance with Hillman making it 4-2 with 13 minutes left. The shot came from KelseyMucelli and it was from outside the circle, which needs a deflection to count and that’s what Bucknell got from Hillman. Misko was able to earn the hat trick late in the game as she dribbled around DiDomizio and hit the open net to make it 5-2 and then Maggie Murphy scored on a penalty corner in the final minute to close out the scoring at 6-2.

Bucknell outshot the Raiders, 28-9, and had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. Colgate is back in action on Oct. 2 against Siena at 3 p.m. on the road.

Volleyball Sweeps Holy Cross

Raiders Move to 2-0 in Patriot League Play after First Conference Weekend

(Hamilton, NY – Sept. 28, 2013) The Colgate women’s volleyball team improved to 2-0 in Patriot League play with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-12) sweep of Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon with the Raiders hitting 32 percent.

Colgate (9-5, 2-0 PL) was led by Diane Seely with 12 kills, while Lindsay Young added eight kills. Kathleen Harris and Kenzie Hume added seven strikes in the win with Kaylee Fifer earning another double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Jackie Macy got some time at setter and put up 15 assists and Caitlin Cremin had 11 digs.

The Crusaders (6-8, 1-2 PL) played their lone game of the weekend this afternoon and got eight kills from Katie McKernan and she also had 11 assists, 11 digs and two blocks.

Holy Cross hung around with the Raiders early in the opening set, but a 5-0 run gave Colgate a 12-6 lead after kills from four different players and an ace from Madison McAndrews. The Raiders let the Crusaders get three back, but then they poured it on with nine-straight points to increase the lead to 21-9. Harris had four kills during the run and Hume had two. Colgate took the 1-0 lead with a 25-13 win after a service ace from Allie Dyer. A big reason for the easy set for the Raiders was that Colgate hit over 33 percent to the Crusaders’ six percent.

The second set was a lot more competitive with Holy Cross earning their first lead in the match at 12-11 after kill by Alex Aycock and a Colgate error. The Crusader advantage got up to a pair of points, but Colgate responded with a short 3-0 run with two attack errors from the visitors and a block and kill by Hume. The teams traded momentum over the next nine points and then the Raiders took a two-point lead on a kill by Seely and an ace from Harris to make it 24-22. Young ended the match with a strike to put Colgate up 2-0 with a 25-23 win.

The Raiders jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set with Fifer adding a pair of kills and Seely posting a couple as well. Holy Cross never got back into the set after that as Colgate cruised to a 25-12 win to earn the sweep. The Raiders finished of the Crusaders by scoring 15 of the final 21 points. Seely had three kills and Katie Stebbins had two.

Colgate is back in action next weekend with a visit to Lehigh on Friday night and then Navy on Saturday afternoon.
