(Hamilton, NY – Oct. 22, 2013) Colgate men’s soccer welcomed Ivy League foe Dartmouth on Tuesday night for its last non-conference game of the year, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Big Green.

Colgate (5-3-4) saw Ethan Kutler notch four shots in the contest while four other Raider players recorded one shot each. Rookie Ricky Brown registered four saves.

Dartmouth (2-11-2) tallied the game’s lone goal in the 72nd minute after Colin Heffron placed one past Brown. Stefan Defregger started the play finding Heffron for his second marker of the year. James Hickok posted three stops in the victory.

The first real chance on net went to Colgate after 15 minutes had passed. Following a Dartmouth foul, Kutler whipped in a great free kick from the left side of the pitch. Zach Tamen got his head on it but his redirection couldn’t find the foot of any Raiders’ players as Dartmouth cleared it out and away from danger.

The Big Green earned a good look on net with 25 minutes remaining in the half. Defregger found himself with the ball just outside the 18-yard box. He sent a driven shot towards goal but it sailed wide of the net.

Colgate answered on the opposite side of the field when Nick Rizzo played a perfect ball to the foot of Scott Brown inside the box. Brown one-timed the ball with a volley but Hickok made a diving stop to keep the game goalless.

A minute later Tamen saved a potential breakaway opportunity when he came sliding in to kick the ball away from Alex Adelabu. Dartmouth then collected the ball on the wing and sent it back towards goal. Alexander Marsh got a good foot on it and shot to the low corner of the net but Raiders’ goalie Brown dove to his left, stopping the shot before it could hit the back of the net.

With less than two minutes remaining before halftime, Dartmouth’s Ricardo Gomez played a free kick into the 18. The ball was bounced around before Sten Stray-Gundersen got a foot on it, but again Brown came up with a brilliant save to keep the game scoreless.

In the opening minutes of the second 45, Dartmouth sent a dangerous cross into the middle of the box. Emmanuel Arteaga corralled the ball and fired a shot towards goal. Tyler Forbes threw his body in front of the shot, allowing enough time for the Raiders to clear it away.

Colgate was on a fast break with 33 minutes left in the contest. Nick Arpey played the ball over to Kutler, who then found Tanner Schilling on the right side of the field. The junior dribbled down the wing before cutting it back and sending it deep into the back of the box. Geinda Smith volleyed the cross one-time toward goal but it sailed just high over the crossbar.

Six minutes later the Big Green were on the attack when Defregger struck the ball eight-yards out. Brown made a kick save, however, to keep Dartmouth out of the net.

Colgate broke free again less than a minute later after Schilling sent a great ball into the back of the 18. Kutler read it perfectly and came sliding getting a foot on the ball. His attempt on net nearly went in but skimmed off the post and out of bounds.

The Big Green took the 1-0 lead at the 72:01 mark thanks to Heffron’s tally. Defregger started the attack by playing the ball over to fellow classmate Heffron just inside the 18. Heffron quickly shot to the opposite post past the outstretched arms of Brown, where it took a friendly bounce off the post and into the back of the net.

Schilling tried to knot the score with 15 minutes remaining in the game. Arpey connected with Schilling at the top of the box, where he took one touch before striking it on net. The ball sailed just wide of the goal but gave the Raiders another great chance on net.

Dartmouth tightened up its defensive efforts and secured its victory in the closing minutes of the game, notching the shutout.

The Raiders outshot the Big Green 12-8 with each team earning three corner kicks in the match.

Colgate is back on the pitch Saturday when the squad travels to Lewisburg, Pa. to faceoff with Bucknell at 4 p.m.
