(Oneida, NY – Feb. 2014) During winter break, students can take advantage of Oneida Public Library’s programs: After School Science with Prof. Jen Herzog, Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m.; Robots on the Move with the FIRST LEGO League Thursday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m.; and a free movie matinee showing of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” Thursday, Feb 20, at 2 p.m.
Prof. Herzog from Herkimer County Community College will be exploring the secret life of cells, bringing with her powerful microscopes so the young people can actually see the complexity of the basic life form.
Robots on the Move is a demonstration of robots created and programmed to do basic tasks by local students who have joined the FIRST LEGO League, which the LEGO Group and Dean Kamen founded to encourage 9- to 16-year olds to pursue science and engineering. Members of the League enter their robotic creations in regional and national challenges.
Ralph Kohler and Tandy Paugh from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, which actively supports the FIRST LEGO League, will guide the students in their demonstrations.
Winter Break’s movie special, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” is a recently release animated film about inventor Flint Lockwood’s continuing pursuit of “food-animal monsters” churned out by his food-processing machine gone haywire. Both the show and the popcorn are free.
