Police Say he was trafficking heroin
(Utica, NY – July 25, 2014) The New York State Police Gun Investigation Unit (GIU) and Community Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET) announce the arrest of a 20 year-old, Ruvejd Smajlovic from Utica following a two month investigation into the trafficking of heroin in the City of Utica and surrounding area.
Smajlovic, of 923 Mary St., Utica was arrested July 24 at 12:35 p.m. on Genesee Street in Utica.
He was charged with third-degree Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (Intent to Sell), a Class B Felony.
Smajlovic was arrested following a search warrant execution, upon his person, during which time he was the passenger in a motor vehicle. A marked State Police Unit conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle on Genesee St. in the City of Utica. He attempted to flee from the vehicle while also attempting to dispose of a quantity of heroin that was in his possession. He was apprehended by the Uniform Trooper along with State Police Investigators once he had exited the vehicle. A quantity of marijuana was also located on his person.
Additional assistance in the investigation was provided by the State Police’s K-9 Unit, The City of Utica Police Department’s – Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Division(CID), METRO Unit and UPD evidence technicians
Smajlovic was arraigned in the City of Utica Court and remanded to the Oneida County Jail in Lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
