(Canastota, NY – Dec. 2014) Have you made any resolutions for the New Year?  Have you always wanted to be more creative?  Have you decided to learn about local history or genealogy?  If so, you will want to stop at the library for some great resources.

At the library, we’ve made it possible for you to “borrow” a librarian when you need help with research, new technologies and more.  We are fortunate to have retired librarian Chris Darby as a resource.  Chris is available for one on one work with patrons researching family genealogy and also in helping patrons who might be re-entering the workforce.  Those returning to work might find that they need help with resume writing, beginning to Intermediate Microsoft Word, Access and Excel.  Chris can also assist patrons how need to set up an email account or who need help learning to attach resumes to an email.  To “Borrow a Librarian,” a patron may call and schedule an appointment or just stop in.  Chris is available to work with patrons on the following days and times:  Tuesdays, 10am – 2pm; Wednesdays, 6pm- 8pm and Thursdays, 10am-2pm.

The Rebecca Eddy Memorial Writing Contest is back!  The library is now accepting poetry and short stories for this contest.  Entries will be received until March 31 at the close of business.  This contest, organized by Joan and Doug Eddy, is a memorial to their daughter, Rebecca.  Ms. Eddy was a graduate of Canastota High School and John Hopkins University.  The contest is to encourage creative works in writing for all ages.  Entry forms are available at the Circulation Desk.  Entry requirements indicate that one entry of a poem or short story (500 – 5,000 words) may be submitted. There are four age categories for submission and entries of those age categories will be judged in both poetry and short stories.  The age categories include:  Age 10 and under, 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 18 years old and over 18 years old.  Entries may be in any style, genre or subject and the contest is free to enter.  There are no residential requirements. An awards ceremony will be held in April.

If learning about local history is your goal, the Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Canastota Library have again teamed up to sponsor the ninth year of the Canalside Talks at the library.  Leading off the series on Monday, January 26 at 7pm will be “Ice Cream” with Rick Stevens of Zems Ice Cream and Joe DiGiorgio of Canal Town Museum.  The duo will talk about the history of ice cream making, local businesses of the past and the business of ZEMS.  The presentation will end with an ice cream social.  This talk is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

The Book Chat group invites you to join them in 2015 for a year of interesting reads. On Tuesday Jan. 27 at 1pm, the group will be discussing “Unbroken” by Lara Hillenbrand. “Unbroken” is a World War II story of survival, resilience and redemption.  In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. Read about Zmperini’s struggles in this book.  Then, join our Book Chat to discuss it!

Our newsletter indicates that Loreen Collin’s work will be on display in our Lawson Community Room.  Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to reschedule Loreen Collins to display her work in December of 2015.  We apologize for any inconvenience.  There will be no art display in January.

Additionally, if you want to try your hand at learning to knit you will want to consider joining one of our knitting groups.  Join either our Thursday Evening Group which meets at 6pm each Thursday or our Morning Group which meets each Friday at 10am.  We currently have about 30 members who meet in the morning and 15 who attend evening group meetings.  Both groups meet in the Lawson Room.  Members knit, crochet and there are even some loom workers in the groups.

The library is here to help you make a great start with all of your resolutions for 2014.  All of these programs are offered through the library at no charge to participants.  Don’t have a library card?  They are free…stop in and see us today.

The library is located at 102 W. Center Street in Canastota.
