(June 2015) Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson) announced the passage of a bill he sponsored that would allow paramedics to transport police work dogs that are injured in the line of duty (A.7668-A).

“Service dogs that work in law enforcement provide a very important role in aiding their police handlers, assisting in their duties and protecting the community,” said Assemblyman Magee. “This legislation will help to make sure that paramedics can transport injured police dogs to the nearest animal hospital or veterinary clinic.”

Currently, paramedics can face severe penalties if they transport a police dog. This legislation allows for the transportation of canine officers by emergency workers when there is not a human that needs treatment – which takes precedent, added Assemblyman Magee.

“Police dogs search for lost people, drugs and explosives among other duties and are placed in life-threatening situations on a daily basis,” said Assemblyman Magee. “This law will ensure that our police work dogs are protected under these exceptional circumstances and can continue to assist our police officers.”

  1. Thank you for your perseverence and hard work…we, as a socienty, ask and expect much of these dogs and, like you, I believe they deserve our best efforts when they are in crisis especially in our name. They are not only dogs, they are heros in everything they word implies.
Thank you again, you have done a very good thing and at the end of the day that is saying alot.
