Hamilton Public Library News
By Hilary Virgil, Library Director
(Hamilton, NY – July 13, 2015) Did you know the Mid York Library System was chosen to participate in the Boilermaker’s Charity Bib Program? There were five team members running on behalf of the Mid York Library System, and they are still on a quest to each raise $796.42 (the Dewey decimal number for running). The money raised will buy audiobooks for use throughout the Mid York Library System, as well as devices for use by people with vision impairments.
Even after the race, we can continue to accept donations on their behalf through Sept. 1. If you would like to help sponsor this cause, please stop by our Library circulation desk to add to our “wall-of-feet,” or donate online at https://www.crowdrise.com/Mid-YorkLibrarySystem.
Why audiobooks? These are in great demand, particularly by people who have macular degeneration or other vision impairments as well as caregivers who spend long hours in hospitals, doctors’ offices, and on the road traveling to these places. In addition, walkers and runners also love to use digital audiobooks on their mp3 players while they use treadmills, which have been clocking extra miles this year due to the weather. Due to the cost of audiobooks on CD, some libraries have had to stop buying them altogether, and the digital audiobooks are easily $70 per book, so the selection is limited. The money raised through the Boilermaker Charity Bibs will purchase items to share among every library to better serve every patron and to stretch the dollars raised. If we exceed our goal, we will also be able to purchase devices on which patrons can use digital audiobooks if they don’t already own one. This means adding computer literacy skills, something everyone benefits from in our digital society.
