(Canastota, NY- Aug. 6, 2015) As the end of summer draws near, many of us split our thoughts between getting ready to send the kids back to school while still enjoying the last days of summer.  At the library, it is the same, this is the time we prepare for our fall programs yet we are still finishing up our Summer Reading Program.  August is a great time to visit the library to pick up a best seller, to grab a video to watch on a rainy day, to view the work of our Artist of the month or to attend a fun performance at the library.

Whether it is a visual feast of the Madison County autumn, the grace of a tree branch reaching up into the sky or the glistening gush of a waterfall, Ruth Donovan is stimulated and encouraged to capture her visions on paper.  Ruth, who is a primarily self-taught artist, is the Canastota Library’s Artist of the Month for August.  Ruth is a member of the Community Fine Arts Guild of Sherrill as well as the Cazenovia Watercolor Society.  She has earned a distinguished Signature Membership in the Central New York Watercolor Society and her work will be on display in various venues during the region through the next year.  She also paints with a large group of artists every winter in Sarasota, Florida. Donovan’s artistic endeavors are described as a soulful experience.  We hope you will stop by the library to see her watercolors during August.

LegosContinuing every Monday evening in August, we are scheduling Block Parties for parents and children. The parties will begin at 5:30 and end at 7 p.m. In this time, parent and child can build items with our Lego Blocks.  Let your imagination take you away or take part in our Block Party Challenges.  This fun, drop in event will be held in the Lawson Community Room.

Our librarian, Mrs. Liz asks that all Reading Records be returned to the Canastota Public Library by Friday, Aug.7.  We hope all our students made their reading goals for the summer and had fun with our Summer Reading Program, “Every Hero Has a Story.”

As their last summer activity, our teens will visit the Canal Town Museum on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 1 p.m. There, Joe DiGiorgio will talk to the students about Canal Town Heroes who helped to make our area so wonderful.  Anyone in grades 6 through 12 is invited to join us.  We’ll meet at the library at 12:45 p.m. and walk to the museum as a group.

The Library’s Book Chat group will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25 in the Carnegie Room to discuss the book, “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty.  The book begins at the annual Trivia Night at the Pirriwee School.  It had always been a peaceful affair, until this year.  First there was a riot; then a parent is found dead and before long, investigators begin piecing together clues of murder.  Behind the apparent homicide are the stories of three women, their husbands and children, their ex-husbands and their new wives.  Please join us for conversation and friendship!

If there are programs that you are interested in seeing us offer at the library, please contact us and let us know.  We’re here to serve you.  Hope you can stop in and see us in August.
