On Wednesday September 23rd at 7 pm the Canastota Public Library welcome author and historian Norm Dann who will present “Greene Smith and the wildlife : the story of Peterboro’s avid outdoorsman.”  Dann will tell the story of Greene Smith, former Peterboro resident, famed ornithologist and son of abolitionist Gerrit Smith.  There is no cost for this event.  For more information please call 315-697-7030.

On Thursday September 24th at 6:30 pm the Cazenovia Public Library will host a screening and discussion of the movie “Lincoln.”  This special viewing is to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and was developed by a partnership between the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  There is no charge for this event.  For more information please call 655-9322.

On Friday September 25th & Saturday September 26th from 6 pm until 8 pm the Onondaga Historical Association will feature “Interludes on the Lake:  OHA’s Fall Ghost Walk.”  Hear the stories of former residents while enjoying the historic Strathmore neighborhood near Onondaga Park’s Hiawatha Lake.  Groups will start every fifteen minutes, and the talks are suitable for anyone 12 and up.  Tickets are $12 for OHA members and $15 for non-members.  For more information or to purchase tickets please call 315-428-1864 extension 312.

On Sunday October 4th from 12 pm until 4 pm Nichols Pond County Park will be host to Madison County’s annual Archives Day.  Come and learn the history of the park including its Native American Roots, and how it became a county park. Displays will be set up featuring multiple artifacts from the numerous archeological digs performed at the site.  Tours will be available explaining the Native American History and site development of the park.  Special speakers from the Oneida Indian Nation will speak on what life was like here before settlement and a Colgate University fellow will present on how the site became linked to Samuel De Champlain’s march through CNY in 1615.  There is no charge for this event.  For more information please call 315-366-2453.

On Saturday October 24th the Catherine Cummings Theatre in Cazenovia will host “the Emancipation of Abraham Lincoln:  Head, Heart and the American Memory.”  This panel will be moderated by Milton Sernett, PhD.  Featured panelists will include Douglas Egerton PhD of Lemoyne College, Joseph Fornieri, PhD, of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Jason Emerson, Author of multiple Lincoln texts, and Robert Paquette, PhD, of Hamilton College.  This will be followed by the NAHOF Tenth Anniversary Dinner (more information to come).  Following Dinner Harold Holzer, President of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation, will present “Lincoln:  The Great Emancipator.”  Costs and times TBD.  More information to come.

On Thursday, October 29th at 6:00 pm the Rome Historical Society welcomes Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz who will present Hops: Birth, Death and Re-Birth of a CNY Industry. Urtz will give a brief history of how hops first became a cash crop, the reasons it disappeared and how its re-emergence occurred.
