(Dec. 2015) Assemblyman Bill Magee (D-Nelson) announced legislation he sponsored that would allow paramedics to transport police work dogs injured in the line of duty has been signed into law (Ch. 549 of 2015).

“Canine officers have become an integral part of law enforcement efforts, regularly facing life-threatening situations to search for missing persons, drugs or explosives,” said Magee. “This law will help ensure injured police work dogs receive the care they deserve and can continue to do their part to keep our families and our communities safe.”

Currently, paramedics can face severe penalties if they transport a police work dog under any circumstances. This law authorizes transportation of injured canine officers by emergency workers to the nearest animal hospital or veterinary clinic, provided no humans require medical attention or transport.

“Allowing emergency responders to care for our injured canine officers is a common-sense measure that honors and preserves the vital role these animals play in modern policing,” added Magee.
