2-25, Gardening 101, March 2Volunteers prepare community garden plots at Rogers Environmental Education Center.

Have you ever thought about starting a garden? With spring on the way and warm weather on the horizon, now is the perfect time to start learning about this fun outdoor hobby.

Many people are reluctant to garden for a variety of reasons, including lack of knowledge and time. Friends of Rogers has a solution for those looking to put their green thumb to the test.

On March 2, Rogers Center in Sherburne will host a learning lecture on gardening, led by instructors from the Colgate Community Garden. Presenters will share information on plant basics, seed selection, plant care, and many other topics participants may need assistance with. If you’re trying to spruce up your garden, or even start one for the first time, this interactive presentation is a must.

“Gardening is a great way to get outside and get some fresh air, as well as a potential chance to spend quality time with friends and family,” said environmental educator Sarah Freedman. “It helps you build relationships, stay active, and even eat healthier!”

As part of the sustainability mission at Colgate University, the Community Garden grows fresh herbs and vegetables used by both the university and the Hamilton Food Cupboard.

“Gardening 101” will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center on state Route 80 in Sherburne; those needing to may use the adjacent parking lot, and the center is handicap accessible. A $3 donation is suggested to support future programs at Rogers Center.

Seasonal hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
