On April 7 through 9, CHS is proud to present the showstopper, Hairspray. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, and quirky, plus-sized, teenage Tracy Turnblad (Libby Welch) has one dream: to dance on the “Corny Collins Show”. Her eccentric parents (Joe Green, Gordie Stansbury) have mixed emotions about their daughter’s aspirations. When Tracy gets put in detention with the African-American students in the school, Seaweed (Matt Collado) teaches her some of their dance moves, and her new found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show.

Overnight, Tracy transforms from a nobody into a star, and uses her newfound influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show. Tracy and her best friend Penny (Kayla Miller, MacKenzie Stevens) face scrutiny and bullying from the network producer, Velma (Ashley Kovach), and her popular, but vicious, daughter, Amber (Leanna Wolf). With the help of the teenage heartthrob Link (Phil Abell, Willy Blanding), host Corny Collins (Zach Jasmin, Jon Rounsville) , and Motormouth Maybelle (Lizz Knasick), Tracy tries to overcome the odds to integrate the “Corny Collins Show.”

Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays. The bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad teaches us all to look past the color and size of one’s skin and fight for every human being’s equal rights.
The show features the artistic and creative talents of over 100 7-12th graders, including a pit band, stage crew, actors, dancers, and tech crew. Tickets are $8/reserved seating and can be purchased pre-sale on March 9th from 5:30 – 7:30 in the CHS main lobby. Beginning March 10th, tickets can be purchased anytime during the day by calling the high school. Tickets will be also available (on a limited basis) at the door. Showtimes are April 7,8,9 at 7:00pm with a special matinee on April 7 at 2pm. Don’t miss this incredible experience.
