Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner will proclaim March as American Red Cross Month during a ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16 at City Hall, 233 E. Washington St., Syracuse.

Mayor Miner will read a Red Cross Month proclamation and raise the Red Cross flag at City Hall. She will be joined by Rosie Taravella, Regional CEO – American Red Cross of Western and Central New York.

The American Red Cross is recognizing the country’s everyday heroes during Red Cross Month. The Red Cross depends on local heroes to fulfill its mission. The Red Cross responds to a community disaster every eight minutes, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families at home and around the world. It must collect 14,000 units of blood every day to fulfill the country’s needs. It trains millions of people in first aid, water safety and other lifesaving skills. And it supports the vaccination of children around the globe against measles and rubella.

Last year, the Central New York Chapter responded to 171 fires in single and multi-family homes,  provided 195 case services for military families, trained 26,148 people in lifesaving skills, and people from this area donated 39,609 units of blood.
