“Many small cities, villages and other populated areas provide municipal water and sewer services to their residents and businesses. Those connected to municipal systems depend on them to provide clean, safe water in a cost-effective fashion.

“We have seen the tragic results when underinvestment in water infrastructure leads to contamination and pollution. However, replacing failing pipes and upgrading treatment plants to comply with federal mandates can cost millions. This is why it’s critical for the state to assist municipalities with making needed upgrades to infrastructure.

“Like any mechanical system, proper maintenance saves taxpayer money. Replacing failing water pipes helps avoid inconvenient and costly water main breaks. Fixing wastewater plants protects against fines and pollution and puts people back to work. Our budget proposal includes $300 million for upgrades to water and sewer systems statewide, helping municipalities avoid costly fixes due to deferred maintenance and keeping our families safe.”
