(Cazenovia, NY – Aug. 2014) The Cazenovia Area Community Development Association is sponsoring a competition for the design and installation of a unique bicycle rack to be installed in the village of Cazenovia. This project will seek to bring art into public spaces, while also serving a practical purpose. The creative energy of Central New York artists and designers is being sought for the creation of this high-profile community art installation.

This project will kick-off the CACDA 2014 signature project, BikeCaz. The goal of BikeCaz is to support a safe, healthy community and environment by encouraging bicycling as a recreational activity and a means of transportation. Various BikeCaz initiatives will also elevate Cazenovia’s visibility as a cycling destination and encourage visitors to stay and enjoy local attractions.

Bike rack designs should seek balance between form and function. The design must be effective in supporting six to eight bicycles in addition to being aesthetically pleasing. A winning design should also be reflective of and consistent with the character of our historic, rural community. Further specifications are found in the call to entries available at bikecaz.com.

Applications are available; the submission period will close Sept. 15. A selection committee will review all submissions and select up to three village-approved designs. From the final three, there will be an opportunity for community members to vote for the final winning design.

Installation of the winning design will take place in spring 2015. The winning artist will receive an award of $4,000, which is to include fabrication and installation of the structure. The bike rack will be installed in Telephone Park in front of the Kinney Drug Store Plaza.

“This project ties together two important factors that drive our local community vitality: recreation and the arts,” said Cazenovia Art Trail Chairwoman Cathy Savage. “There is so much artistic talent locally and regionally. This is a great opportunity for artists, and we are very excited to see some creative, useful designs.”
