(Verona, NY – May 2015) Fred “Fritz” Scherz, Jr., Councilman on the Verona Town Board in Verona recently announced that he has selected Tyler Brewer (son of Ken and Kris Brewer) of Verona as the winner of the 6th Annual Fred Scherz Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service.

Brewer has volunteered in the Adopt-A-Highway Program along Route 31 in Verona and Vernon. He also helped clean up along Townline Road and Tilden Hill Road with his family. Via the VVS Interact Club, Brewer has raked leaves, rang the collection bell for the Salvation Army, and sang Christmas Carols as well. In addition, he was involved in VVS Drama Club and VVS Boys Soccer.

As winner of this award, Mr. Brewer received a certificate of accomplishment and a check for $250.

“Upon reviewing Mr. Brewer’s application, I was impressed,” said Scherz.  “It’s obvious Tyler cares about not only the Verona community, but the surrounding areas as well, as his volunteerism has extended beyond the Town of Verona.  Cleaning up garbage along a road is no easy task, yet he did not let that dissuade him from putting forth quite a few hours of volunteerism to make the community a lot cleaner and better looking. Besides being a hard worker with all his volunteerism, he also excelled in the classroom as he was named VVS Class of 2015 Valedictorian. I congratulate Tyler for not only winning the scholarship, but for also setting a great example for others to follow.  On a personal note, I know my Dad would’ve been impressed with Mr. Brewer’s on-going volunteer efforts!”
