(Canastota, NY – Oct. 2015) The Canastota Public Library is very busy this month.  Come and join in on the rest of our Oct. events.  As a reminder, the library will be closed on Monday Oct. 12 for Columbus Day. We will also be closing early (at 4:30 p.m.) on Thursday Oct. 15 for a Staff Development Evening.

Some days it is tough to have the time to put together a healthy meal for the family.  Join Angela Rigler on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6pm for Easy Freezer Meals.  Freezer meals can be a quick and easy way for busy families to get good, wholesome meals on the table quickly.  All you need is a little extra time once a month to do some prep work.  Angela has scoured cookbooks and the internet looking for those recipes to help you eat well this fall and winter.  Angela will share tips, recipes and some variations on freezer meal preparation that your family is sure to love.

The second Canalside Talk for the year will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7pm.  Tony Wonderley, Ph.D., curator of collections at the Oneida Community Mansion House will talk about the Oneida Community.  He will provide an illustrated introduction to the most radical utopia in American history.  The talk will delve into why the Perfectionists of Oneida were the scandal of Victorian America and why they called themselves communists while achieving success as industrial capitalists.  The talk showcases the Oneida Mansion House and their company that eventually became the world’s largest manufacturer of silverware. Wonderley is a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellow and a Fellow of the New York State Archeological Association.  He publishes widely on New York archology, Native American mythology and the Oneida Community.  Canalside Talks are done in cooperation with the Canastota Canal Town Museum and the Library.  These events are always free and open to the public.

“The Girl You Left Behind,” by Jojo Moyes is the book for the Oct. Book Chat.  The Book Chat group will meet to discuss this book on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 1pm.  This is a story of love, loss and sacrifice told with Moyes’ signature ability to capture our hearts.  Light refreshments will be served.

Return to the library at 7pm on Tuesday, Oct. 27 for “Perfectly Petrifying Poe.” Join Vince Doty as he shares his favorite Edgar Allan Poe pieces to get you in the spirit of Halloween.  Learn about this famous author, poet, editor and literary critic whose works like The Raven have mesmerized readers for 175 years.  This program is geared towards middle school and older as it may include some of Poe’s more frightening tales.

Please remember to patronize our Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale which will be held on Oct. 29, 30 and 31.  The sale will operate in the lower level of the library on those days.  Our inventory is large and includes gently used books in hardcover and softcover in many genres.  As well, we will have books on CD, movies on both VHS and DVDs, puzzles and much more.  There are currently over six raffle baskets on display on the first floor which will be raffled at the end of the book sale.  The sale will be held at the following times:  Thursday, Oct. 29:  9am – 8:30pm; Friday, Oct. 30:  9am – 5pm and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 10am – 4pm.  We hope you will stop by and stock up on your reading materials.  The prices are very reasonable! All proceeds will be donated to the library for library and programming needs.
