(Alexandria Bay, NY – Feb. 10, 2013) The State Police in Alexandria Bay is assisting the Jefferson County Office of Fire & Emergency Management and The NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control, with a fire investigation in the Town of Alexandria, Jefferson County. 

The residential fire, which occurred at 44014 County Route 2, was reported at approximately 6:17 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. First Responders and Fire Personnel on scene located 72 year old resident Robert Cheesman who was subsequently transported to River Hospital in Alexandria Bay. Cheesman, who was the only person present at the time of the fire, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Although the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, preliminary investigation has initially ruled out foul play, as the fire is believed to be accidental.

Also assisting at the scene were the following agencies: Alex Bay Fire and Ambulance, TIERS, Guilfoyle Ambulance, Redwood Fire, Plessis Fire, Clayton Fire, Hammond Fire, Theresa Fire, Evans Mills Fire, Pamelia Fire, LaFargeville Fire and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
