(Utica, NY – May 1, 2013) Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) has recently partnered with Oneida County Habitat for Humanity (OCHFH) to help further advance the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restore efforts in our community. Environmentally sustainable deconstruction is a two-part plan to include a residential green deconstruction project in the Town of Ava and the development of an informational brochure to increase landfill alternatives.

The green deconstruction project will incorporate careful removal and reuse of material from two residential houses on Authority-owned property in the Town of Ava. Wall components and lumber will be re-designed by Bonacci Architects for reuse in a Habitat for Humanity house at a later date.

“The Authority’s mission is to manage this region’s solid waste and recyclable material in an environmentally sound, cost effective, efficient and safe manner. This initiative and partnership will increase recycling and waste reduction. By partnering with Habitat for Humanity in this deconstruction effort, reusable construction material will be diverted from our landfill conserving both resources and landfill space” said William Rabbia, Authority Executive Director.

“Bonacci Architects are proud to be a partner with OCHFH in their deconstruction initiative and feel this is an environmentally responsible approach to utilizing existing resources for repurposing,” said Dave Bonacci.

The new demolition/disposal alternatives brochure being developed by the Authority and Habitat for Humanity will be distributed throughout Oneida and Herkimer Counties to offer information and awareness for alternatives to landfill disposal as well as acceptable materials by Oneida County Habitat for Humanity to be resold to the general public.

“This partnership offers wonderful opportunities as we pursue a green building standard, beginning with reuse of harvested materials from the area’s older housing stock.” said Louis LaBella, Director of Operations for OCHFH.

“This program will benefit our organization through volunteer training, lowering construction costs and creating sustainable revenue for our local Habitat building projects, ultimately strengthening our community through our commitment to provide safe, decent and affordable housing.”
