(Richfield Springs, NY – May 2013) The Richfield Springs Community Center now has six newly installed planter boxes with shrubs, stone wall gardens, and picnic tables thanks to Thomas Twomey, 17, of Richfield Springs. It was his Eagle Scout project. Through the delegation of his team and determination, his project was a success, and fulfills the community service requirement needed for advancing to Eagle Scout rank. Eagle is the pinnacle of achievement and leadership in Scouting.

When asked about his project Twomey said, “Being a leader taught me how to stay focused and get things done safely and efficiently. I learned how to take charge and stay organized. Above all it taught me how to give back to the community, to help others and how to express gratitude as a mentor. ”

Twomey and his team of Scouts and adult leaders gathered all the necessary materials and worked diligently on the beautification and landscaping project. All of the materials were funded by the Community Center with gracious donations from Seven Stars Tree Farm, Wycoff Construction, Melinda’s Garden Bar, and Jay-K Lumber. The project totaled 132 hours.

Achieving Eagle rank is never easy, but for every Scout that receives his badge, it is a defining moment he will remember for the rest of his life. When asked about what being an Eagle means to him, Twomey said, “Being an Eagle means more than Scout Law- trustworthy, kind, obedient, cheerful, brave, or reverent. It’s more than a rank or title to put on an application, and it doesn’t make you a special person. It means you know when to take charge, speak up, and lead. It means you know when to step back, listen, and follow. It also means you know when to walk side-by-side with those closest to you.”

Twomey currently attends Richfield Springs Central School. In the fall he plans to attend Clarkson University to study environmental engineering and sustainable energy.
