(Salisbury, NY – June 4, 2013) Store owners Nancy aNancy Carlson Country Store Stuffed Peppersnd Rob Carlson at The Country Store in Salisbury are featuring fresh bell peppers for sale along with stuffed peppers in their restaurant as part of the “Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play” grant through Herkimer County HealthNet working with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County to increase the sale of fresh produce in convenience stores.

The store display features the Herkimer County Produce Cycle Pepper brochures which provide information on growing, purchasing, preparing, preserving and composting peppers.  “Stuffed Pepper” recipe cards also are included on the display. The Carlson’s  plan on selling and featuring locally-grown vegetables throughout the season including tomatoes in August and sweet corn in September.

The Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work and Play grant is funded by the New York State Department of Health and was granted to 22 of the 62 counties through 2015.  Locally, the grant is administered by Herkimer County HealthNet.  In an effort to save money in regard to health care costs and productivity losses, Herkimer County HealthNet along with other organizations throughout New York State are working to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes by making it easier to be physically active and making healthier food choices.
