Fans Can Donate Blood Before or During the Game in the Hank Sauer Room

(Syracuse, NY – June 26, 2013) The Central New York Region of the American Red Cross and the Syracuse Chiefs are teaming up to honor the Central New York residents who raised money for the Red Cross this spring through the “Heroes for the American Red Cross” campaign.

The Chiefs provided free general admission tickets to the Red Cross for the 5 p.m. Sunday, June 30, game against the Rochester Red Wings at NBT Stadium. The Central New York Region distributed the tickets to everyone who participated in the “Heroes” campaign, plus Red Cross volunteers who teach health and safety classes, work at blood drives, and respond to disasters such as house fires in Syracuse or tornadoes in the Midwest.

Heroes for the American Red Cross (HARC) is a grassroots campaign where businesses, school clubs, church groups, civic organizations and individuals seek pledges to raise at least $1,000 for the Central New York Region. The money raised during this year’s campaign from March through June will support Red Cross services, including disaster relief, assistance for fire victims, emergency communications for military members, and lifesaving classes such as First Aid and CPR.

Examples of participants from this year’s HARC campaign: several student clubs from Cayuga Community College raised $1,357 with a school-wide fundraiser; Skaneateles Middle School students raised $1,300 by selling T-shirts; and Pier’s and Blake restaurant in Utica hosted a concert that raised $5,360. Pier’s and Blake raised the most money for HARC, and its employees and their families will enjoy the June 30 game from a luxury box donated by Dannible/McKee and Associates, Ltd., in Syracuse.

Blood Drive at the Ballpark

From 4 to 8 p.m. June 30, the Red Cross will host a blood drive in NBT Stadium’s Hank Sauer Room. Fans who donate blood will be able to watch the game from the Hank Sauer Room at the right-field end of the concourse. Fans who donate blood will also receive two free tickets to a 2013 Chiefs’ game of their choice, courtesy of the Chiefs.

The Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and Disaster Relief Vehicle (DRV) will be on display in the parking lot before the game, and Red Cross volunteers will be on hand to explain their role during a disaster. A Red Cross information table will be set up on the concourse, and Rosie Taravella, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Central New York Region, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

“We want to thank the Chiefs for providing the tickets for our heroes and volunteers and supporting the Red Cross in Central New York,” said Danielle Hayden, Branch Manager of the Red Cross Oswego Branch and coordinator of the HARC campaign. “There’s no better way to reward our heroes and volunteers than to give them a night of fun and entertainment at the ballpark.”
