accident investigation3(1)(Carthage, NY – Dec. 14 2013) On Dec. 13 at approximately 7:20 p.m. State Police in Carthage responded to a two car serious personal injury accident that occurred on County Route 45 in the Town of Champion, Jefferson County.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Nissan Versa, driven by Wilhelmina Johnson, age 42, from Copenhagen was traveling in an north easterly direction along County Route 45 with a 2 year-old child passenger in the rear passenger car seat.

Brian Phillips, age 42 from Carthage was operating a Dodge pick-up truck, traveling in a south westerly direction, when Johnson’s car exited from the south side of roadway, over corrected and drifted into the on-coming lane, and into the path of Phillips. Phillips took evasive actions but could not avoid the collision.
Both occupants of the Nissan were transported from the scene and MEDAVAC by Life Net to Upstate with massive head trauma.

The 2 year-old passenger was later pronounced deceased at 8:48 p.m. at Upstate Medical, Johnson remains in critical condition.

Phillips was treated and released at the scene.
