Theorem Painting Exhibited

Through March 31, visitors to the Cazenovia Public Library Art Gallery may enjoy theorem paintings by Cazenovia resident Janet McCobb.

Theorem Painting is an early American Decorative Technique that dates back to the first half of the 19th Century.  It first began to appear in the New England states between 1810 and 1840 when the popularity of embroidery as the “essential” skill for young ladies began to decline.

The cohesive composition of theorems is achieved through a series of stencils cut in such a manner that no two areas immediately next to each other can be placed on the same stencil.  Any theorem, therefore, will require the sequence of two or more stencils or overlays.  Paint is then rubbed into the stencils with details added by hand with a fine brush.

McCobb’s exhibition includes works from an eclectic array of antique patterns and can be viewed during regular library hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
