(Verona, NY- April 22, 2014) On this Earth Day, the Oneida Indian Nation’s Turning Stone Resort Casino is proving a new partnership with the non-profit Clean the World, Inc. is producing results in recycling the resort’s used soaps and shampoos to help reduce unnecessary waste and prevent disease throughout the world.
Beginning in February 2014, Turning Stone started participating in the program to have hygiene products from the resort sanitarily recycled and repurposed for emergency relief efforts, and for delivery to developing countries and homeless shelters.
In less than three months of participating with Clean the World, Inc., Turning Stone’s hotels have already collected over 8,000 pounds of used hygiene products for sanitary recycling, along with over 3,000 pounds of plastic for recycling. The collected hygiene products have already been recycled to create over 22,000 soap bars for use by Clean the World, Inc.
Since its inception in 2009, Clean the World has distributed more than 340 tons of soap, shampoo and other amenities to dozens of countries in need worldwide. Turning Stone will add to those totals by contributing all excess of the resort’s more than 300,000 soap bars and 440,000 bottled hygiene products used annually.
By partnering with Clean the World, Turning Stone is also helping to reduce the landfill waste generated by its resort hotels. In the past five years alone, Clean the World and its partners have diverted more than 1,000 tons (2 million pounds) from clogging landfills. Turning Stone’s efforts will literally help save lives. Studies show that hand washing with soap can effectively reduce the instances of diarrheal disease and acute respiratory infection, the leading global causes of death for children under five.
