(Marcellus, NY – May 2014) “Wow! This is a big deal!” said Piper Wise, a third grader at State Street Elementary School in Skaneateles. She had just been informed by Susan Barry, her art teacher, that her work was selected for display in the Baltimore Woods Student Art Exhibit. From May 1 through May 31, nature-themed student artwork from the Auburn, Marcellus, Skaneateles and West Genesee school districts will be on display in the Art Gallery at Baltimore Woods Nature Center, 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus.
This exhibit celebrates the artistic achievements of area students with a variety of creations from the primary to senior high levels displayed side by side. There is work in painting, drawing, collage, puppetry and ceramics, all created with aspects of nature in mind.
“Early humans were always directly connected to nature, and it was an important source of inspiration for art work such as that found in prehistoric caves, on pottery and so forth. Children of today, who are often steps away from the natural world, continue to have a wonderful capacity to observe, learn and appreciate it, and creating art affords them the opportunity for their own interpretations. We are enjoying supporting the nature/art connection with this exhibit of student work from local schools,” said Gallery Coordinator Karen Jean Smith, a retired art educator.
