Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association, 30-plus years strong, is an open-admission shelter in Canastota, New York, that serves more than 1,000 cats and dogs each year. Wanderers’ Rest accepts unwanted or stray dogs and cats from Madison County, but is open to all Central New Yorkers who wish to adopt a dog or cat.
Wanderers’ Rest was founded in 1981 by a group of citizens who wanted to do more than impound stray animals in Madison County. Their vision for a comprehensive humane organization emphasized caring for and preparing homeless cats and dogs for adoption.
Today Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association shelters, heals and enriches up to 1,500 cats and dogs each year. The organization finds new homes for unwanted animals, reunites lost pets with their families, and supports low-income families with spay/neuter assistance and emergency pet food to enable them to afford and keep their pets.
Educational programs in area schools emphasize spaying and neutering and responsible pet ownership for the next generation of pet-lovers.
Through its public education programs, the shelter promotes responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals everywhere. Wanderers’ Rest is a non-profit, 501c3 organization that welcomes contributions and volunteers. Call 697-2796 or visit www.wanderersrest.org.
