Hamilton Public Library News
By Hilary Virgil, Library Director
(Hamilton, NY – April 2015) Many thanks to all the participants in our recent Peeps Diorama Contest. It’s been such a pleasure to have these creative book-based peeps dioramas in the library these past few weeks. The winners of the People’s Choice Awards go to:
1st place – Coraline by Lauren and Jen Mansfield
2nd place – Blitz by Caleb Cassulis
3rd place – Pinkalicious by Emma Chapman
Photos of winners in order of placement.
We hope all the participants had as much fun making their Peeps dioramas as we did! Not to worry if you missed it, the display is featured in the photo gallery on our website, under the Programs and Events section. A special acknowledgement, too, for Katie McDevitt and Hamilton Village Real Estate for helping to organize and sponsor this event—thank you!
We were thrilled to host a Caldecott-Newbery Tea for the first time this spring. This event was designed for any teens and adults who have an interest in children’s picture books, chapter books, and the Caldecott and Newbery Awards given annually for their distinguished work. The book lovers who volunteered to present at the event included librarians, Colgate Bookstore staff members, teens, and a book reviewer. A few presenters are also parents who lend another perspective and appreciation for children’s books.
The tea was a great opportunity to see all the books together at once, thumb through them, and hear short “book talks”–explaining a bit about each book, the author or illustrator being honored, maybe sharing a few quotes or pictures, and getting a sense of why each one was being honored as an award recipient or honorable mention. The Friends of the Library graciously provided refreshments. We were quite pleased with the event this first year and hope it will continue to pick up steam as an annual event locally.
