Same Mission, More Support for Bioenergy in NYS

(Syracuse, NY – June 2015) The New York Biomass Energy Alliance is now the New York Bioenergy Association (NYBA).  Although the name is new, the organization is still the same individuals, businesses and organizations that united around an important mission in 2009.

“Over the years, we’ve learned that the name ‘New York Biomass Energy Alliance’ was quite a mouthful, and it’s hard to say NYBEA,” explains Matt McArdle, chair of the NYBA Board of Directors, “That’s why we’re pleased to announce our new, shorter name, the New York Bioenergy Association.  Although the name is new, we’re still the same people from all sectors of the bioenergy industry working together to enhance support, understanding and use of sustainably produced farm and forest biomass as a source of renewable energy.”

In New York, bioenergy provides more than 30,000 homes and businesses with clean, renewable electricity and 100,000 homes and businesses with clean, renewable heat. The use of bioenergy for heat saves home owners and businesses approximately $154 million a year in New York, alone.  In addition to using bioenergy to produce heat and electricity, there is also great potential for the growth of the cellulosic ethanol industry in New York, home to two liquid bioenergy pilot plants.

Today, there are over forty members of NYBA, spanning from pellet and liquid biofuel producers to appliance manufacturers to farmers and research institutions. The Association seeks to build public understanding of the full range of biomass-to-energy technologies, and the contribution that they can make towards meeting the state and region’s energy needs while creating in-state jobs and reducing carbon emissions.
