Traffic stop leads to DWI charge in Vernon
(Vernon, NY – Jan. 24, 2016) Oneida based state police charged a Westmoreland man with DWI following a traffic stop in the Town of Vernon Wednesday evening.
At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 20, Trooper Steven Fountain observed a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer weaving across the center line while driving eastbound on Cooper Street in Vernon. Trooper Fountain stopped the vehicle and interviewed the driver, George A. Dorn, 51, of Route 26, Westmoreland. Dorn had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and was asked to perform field sobriety tests, which indicated that he was intoxicated.
Dorn was taken into custody for DWI and transported to the Oneida state police barracks for processing, where a breath test determined his blood alcohol content to be .13 percent. Dorn was issued traffic tickets for driving while intoxicated, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, failure to keep right and possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a vehicle.
He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Vernon Court on Feb. 17.
Speeding driver charged with DWI in Verona
Oneida based state police charged a Utica man with DWI after stopping him for speeding in the Town of Verona Wednesday evening.
At approximately 11:35 p.m. on Jan. 20 Trooper Jeremy Nash was patrolling on State Route 31 in the Town of Verona when he stopped a 1994 Toyota Camry for driving 81 mph in a 55 mph zone. Upon interviewing the driver, Kyaw Wah, 27, of Steuben Street, Utica, a strong odor of alcoholic beverage was observed as he spoke. Field sobriety tests indicated that Wah was intoxicated and he was taken into custody for DWI.
Wah was transported to the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined his blood alcohol content to be .16 percent. Wah was issued traffic tickets for driving while intoxicated, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or greater, unlicensed operator, speeding and possessing an open container of alcoholic beverage in a vehicle.
Wah is scheduled to appear in the Town of Verona Court on Feb. 2.
Kirkville man charged with DWI in Bridgeport
A Kirkville man was charged with Aggravated DWI after a trooper observed his vehicle parked in the roadway in Bridgeport Thursday evening.
At approximately 8:20 p.m. on January 21, Trooper Nathan Parrino stopped a vehicle on Bridgeport-Kirkville Road in the Town of Sullivan for a traffic violation. While on the traffic stop, Trooper Parrino observed a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck approach his location from the rear, pass his patrol vehicle at a very slow speed and then park in the middle of the southbound lane of the road just ahead of his location. After clearing the traffic stop, Trooper Parrino pulled ahead to check on the parked truck and interview the driver. The trooper observed that the driver of the pickup truck, who was identified as Joseph T. Benedict, 45, of Fyler Road, Kirkville had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and he was asked perform field sobriety tests. Those tests indicated that Benedict was intoxicated and he was taken into custody for DWI.
Benedict was transported to the Sullivan state police satellite office for processing, where a breath test determined that his blood alcohol content was .25 percent. Benedict was issued traffic tickets for driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a BAC of .18 percent or greater and a parking violation and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Sullivan Court of Feb. 9.
Hit and Run driver charged with DWI in Verona
Oneida based state police charged a Syracuse man with Aggravated DWI following a hit and run accident on State Route 365 in the Town of Verona Thursday evening.
On Jan. 21 at approximately 8:30 p.m. a 1999 Chrysler Sebring travelling northeast on Route 365 struck the rear of a 2012 Mercedes Benz SUV that had stopped at a red light at the intersection of Route 31. When the operator of the Mercedes got out to speak to the driver of the Sebring, the Chrysler pulled away and continued driving northeast on Route 365. Responding troopers were advised by witnesses that there were no injuries and that the Chrysler vehicle that fled the scene had been seen stuck in the center median of Route 365 approximately a mile away.
Troopers located the Sebring off the roadway near the Old Oneida Road intersection and identified the driver as Joseph E. Ackerman, 48, of Eastview Avenue in Syracuse. Troopers determined that Ackerman was intoxicated and he was taken into custody for DWI.
Ackerman was transported to the Oneida state police barracks, where a breath test determined his blood alcohol content to be .21 percent. Ackerman was issued traffic tickets for driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI with a BAC of .18 percent or greater, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, possessing an open container of alcoholic beverage in a vehicle and following too closely.
He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Verona Court Feb. 9.
