(Herkimer, NY- Aug. 2013) Do you have a woodlot which may need thinning? How about cutting for firewood or even wildlife habitat?

If so then you might be interested in the upcoming workshop called “Introduction to Managing Your Woodlot” on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Cornell Cooperative Extension office in East Herkimer.

The featured speaker will be Andrew Drake, DEC Forester in Herkimer County.

Drake began work with NYS DEC in 2006 with a B.S. in Environmental Science and Forestry from SUNY in Syracuse. He has experience in timber inventory and sales and also documentation of invasive species on private and public lands.

Drake will speak on the history of New York’s forest lands, current threats to our forests, the importance of stewardship and the role of the forester.

How can you manage your forest for better value? What are the three types of foresters and their jobs? How about continuing education and other programs for landowners? These and other topics will be covered in the presentation as well as time for your questions and answers.

The entire presentation will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at approximately 8:30 p.m. Registration is free of charge but be sure to call Cornell Cooperative Extension at (315)866-7920 or email herkimer@cornell.edu by Monday, Sept. 23 to reserve your space. Be aware that seating is limited so don’t delay. Registrants will be put on a waiting list if the seating capacity has been filled.
