Girl Scouts New Use this(New Hartford, NY – Nov. 2013) The Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways is looking for girls who want to help others by becoming part of the council’s Disaster Relief Team. The team has traveled to help people recover after natural disasters like hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. Girls must be between the ages of 16 and 18 to participate. Non-registered Girl Scouts are also invited to join in. A kickoff meeting will be held at the New Hartford Service Center, 600 French Road, on Nov. 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Members of the Girl Scout Disaster Relief Team use their April break from school to travel to communities which have been devastated by natural disaster and are in need of help cleaning and rebuilding. They have traveled to places such as Alabama, Florida, and most recently, Jamaica, NY. Although this team originated in the Utica area, we want to expand our current group and start another Disaster Relief Team in the southern region.

Girls that are part of the Disaster Relief Team develop a strong sense of self, develop positive values, promote cooperation and team building, advocate for themselves and others, and feel empowered to make a difference in the world – all part of the outcomes of being involved with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

All interested girls and adult volunteers should attend this meeting. Those attending should register by Nov. 15. For more information, or to learn more about this amazing opportunity, contact Miranda Nieto at (315) 733-2391, ext. 2124 or mnieto@gsnypenn.org.
