(Utica, NY – May 2014) Annually, National Nurses Week begins on May 6 and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.

Four nurses were recognized with Nurse of Distinction Awards from St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Case Management, St. Elizabeth Medical Group and the College of Nursing on May 8.  Also named were a Nurse Technician and Ward Clerk of Distinction.

Named as St. Elizabeth Medical Center Nurse of Distinction was:

Mario Rotondi, RN began working at the Medical Center in 2003 as a nurse tech on special care. He then worked as an LPN on 3C for approximately three years. He graduated from St. Elizabeth College of Nursing in 2005 and has worked as an RN on 3C since then. Mario exemplifies the mission of the Medical Center: he is always willing to assist his coworkers, provides excellent patient care and always presents a positive attitude.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center Quality and Case Management Nurse of Distinction:

Debra Mizgala, RN graduated from St. Elizabeth College of Nursing in 2003.  She has been an Insurance Review Nurse with St. Elizabeth for four years, and prior to this worked as a Quality Review Nurse at Bassett Hospital, with her main task developing a congestive heart failure program for the CMS government initiatives.  She has two sons, Eric and Mikkel, and two granddaughters, Haley and Hanna.

Elizabeth College of Nursing Nurse Educator of the Year:

Doreen Del Rosario MS, RN is a graduate of the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, receiving her Associate of Applied Science Degree and Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She received her Master of Science Degree in Nursing from the State University of New York Institute of Technology in Utica, NY in 2011.

Doreen’s previous professional experience includes acting as Oncology Nurse Manager for the Bassett Cancer Institute in Cooperstown, NY as well as Ambulatory Oncology Staff Nurse and Preceptor at Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, NY. She has taught numerous courses in chemotherapy and biotherapy and has attended various conferences in New York City and Philadelphia.

Doreen began her teaching career at St. Elizabeth College of Nursing in August 2011 and is currently a Course Coordinator for first-year nursing students, overseeing their theory, lab and clinical experiences.

St. Elizabeth Medical Group Nurse of Distinction:

Dyan Sardelli, RN has been with St. Elizabeth Medical Group, New Hartford practice for one and a half years and has worked with Dr. Toby Taylor for approximately 16 years.  She graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College and resides in Cedarville with her husband, Anthony, and their two sons, Frank and Ray.  In her free time, she enjoys spending time at home with family.

Named as St. Elizabeth Medical Center Nurse Tech of Distinction:

Laura Oliver works as a nurse technician throughout the hospital and attended Maranatha Christian Academy in New Hartford. Laura trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Presbyterian Homes and Services prior to joining SEMC in April 2010.  She also has past experience as a medical billing clerk and as an executive assistant at Randallsville New Life Church.

Laura is being recognized for her positive attitude, willingness to help nurses and ancillary staff, her excellent people skills and willingness to go beyond what is usually expected to achieve patient goals. She develops superb rapport with staff members and always exhibits a winning attitude. Laura is married and has two children, Ryan and Haley. She lives in Brookfield with her children and significant other, Steve.

Named as St. Elizabeth Medical Center Ward Clerk of Distinction:

Paula Shaw has worked in the hospital Operating Room as the Ward Clerk for three years.  In the midst of all the OR activity, Paula always remains steady.  She has a firm grasp on all that is happening in the OR and is a huge help to the charge nurse.  Most often, she anticipates the needs of the rest of the staff members and is always a pleasure to work with.
