Old Forge, NY (February 26, 2016) – The Gettysburg College Choir and Camerata will perform a concert on Sunday, March 6th at 4:00 p.m. at Gould Hall at VIEW Arts Center.
A variety of a cappella sacred and secular music in many styles will be performed. There will be a special emphasis on choral settings of texts by William Shakespeare, in honor of the 400thanniversary of his death. Music by Jake Runestad, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, Willametta Spencer, Benjamin Britten, Casey Rule, John Rutter, and Matt Carlson. The Camerata, a 14-member chamber group from within the College Choir, will perform a group of lighter pieces. There is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy!
The Gettysburg College Choir is the premier choral ensemble of the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College in central Pennsylvania. The choir is acclaimed for performances of choral music from the Renaissance to Contemporary eras. The ensemble tours annually: this year with performances in New York, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. The choir also tours internationally, with recent excursions to Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and Canada. Since 2000 the group has toured four times to Nicaragua, adopting a service-learning model that combines performance with immersion in the local culture.
The College Choir has 44 undergraduate singers that include both music majors and students in other majors, from Biology to Political Science. Singers are selected through a competitive audition process, and the ensemble is committed to the highest levels of musicianship and professionalism.
The College Choir is conducted by Dr. Robert Natter, Associate Professor and Director of Choral Activities at Gettysburg College, where he directs the Gettysburg College Choir, Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, Camerata, and teaches conducting. He joined the faculty at Gettysburg in 1998, and is active as a guest conductor and clinician in the region. He holds music degrees from the University of California at Santa Cruz (B.A. and M.A.) and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (D.M.A.).
All proceeds from this performance will benefit the Start With Art program, View’s free after school program for area youths.
